Il Palio Siena

Italy is definitely a country of traditions, and so are its cities, each of them and all together. Every year Siena throws a bright party for Il Palio festival, annually 2nd of July. Every year the festival takes place in Piazza del Campo, the holiday of the Madonna of Provenzano, called Palio di Provenzano or also Palio delle Madonna. If you still have no idea what I'm I talking about, here is some explanation, this is spectacular horse race, held during the summer, there is another one celebrated on August.

I will admit that the first Siena's race was done with bulls and even donkeys, I guess they were testing, which animal would be more suitable for this particular event. And later a definite switch to horses was made. But not everyone can participate, certain number of Contrade have a right to take a part in Palio, they are chosen by a lot held in spring which allows only ten different Contradas participate.

During the middle ages, Siena was fighting for a long battle to establish its fiercely held independence from Florence and other nearby city states, Siena of today were formed for military and administrative reason to help defend the city. Origins of this classic race dates back over almost 700 years, and it has been always must see event, so people from all over the closest cities, also Florentines went to enjoy it. You will see middle ages costumes and very pleasant atmosphere, which wil throw you in a time machine and make you live a dream.
