Denia On The Road - Hostel in Europe

Denia, Spain
Denia party town numero uno!!. Dominated by a Moorish castle overlooking the town, Denia is not only rumoured to have been listed by the Guinness Book of Records as having more “ fiestas ” than any other town in Europe but it is also the main ferry port for access to Ibiza and the Balearic Islands of Majorca and Minorca .

Recorded history speaks of Denia as a major Iberian settlement, then a Greek colony, a Roman conquest, a Moorish community and last but not least one of the most important Spanish ports on the Mediterranean coast.

Today Denia is a bustling fishing port with provincial markets and a Spanish atmosphere and if anyone knows how to party it's the Spanish ! Denia is 100 kilometres north of Alicante airport and 100 kilometres south of Valencia airport. There are two ferry companies operating daily services to Ibiza from Denia including a fast ferry which makes the journey in two and a half hours.

Many people come to Denia for its rich assortment of local activities such as hill walking, mountain biking, climbing, sailing, wind surfing, kite surfing, diving, water skiing, horse riding, tennis and golf (to name but a few……). But the inner circle comes just to enjoy the many “chiringuitos” (beach bars) scattered along the more than 20 kilometres of beautiful beaches and secluded coves.

From Denia you can make dozens of interesting day trips to natural wonders such as the city of Guadalest or the waterfalls at Algar or alternatively to man made wonders such as Terra Mitica , or Terra Natura , or Aqualandia , or MundoMar …………… There is also a beautiful small gauge railway line from Denia to Alicante which winds along the coast through the Orange and Lemon groves appropriately called the “ Limon Expres ”. Alternatively the historic city of Valencia is only one hours drive away.

Local shops are well assorted and there are many local markets. Denia has a surprising range of fashion outlets catering for every taste and budget. Because Denia has a summer population 10 times larger than in the winter there is an impressive range of restaurants , tapas bars and pubs throughout the town.

And then the “ fiestas ”!! The year kicks off with “ Three Kings ” in January, in February there is “ Carnaval ”, in March “ Fallas ”, in April “ Semana Santa ”, in June “ San Juan ”, in July “ Bous de la Mar ”, in August “ Moros y Cristians ” and in September the “ International Dance Festival ”. Not to mention other special occasions such as the “ Historic Motorcycle Concours ”, the “ International Folk Festival ” and the cycle of classical “ Convent Concerts ” among others.

Come to Denia and you may well wonder where you found the time to visit other cities!
