Oslo On The Road - Hostel in Europe

Oslo, Norway
Oslo is a small capital with most places within walking distance. The most popular places are Gustav Vigeland Sculpture Park , the Holmenkollen Ski Jump , the Viking ship Museum, the Folk Museum and the National Gallery.

The main street in Oslo is Karl Johan, but Downtown is much more than just this street. Visit Kvadraturen where you will see the oldest buildings in town, The Museum of contemporary Art and private galleries. Just a minute away it's the Akershus fortress and Castle , which offers a great view over the harbour and Town Hall . Other nice buildings to see are the University, National Theatre, Parliament, Oslo Cathedral and Royal Castle with its park.

By the City Hall you have Aker Brygge , the former shipyard. It's a big centre with shops, restaurants, bars and pubs. From here you may take a boat to the Kon Tiki and Viking ship museum or just seat down for a view over the fjord of Oslo.

Grunnerløkka is the area where for more than 100 years ago most of the working class lived. You can see the old factories while you take a walk along Akerselva river . The River divides Oslo into a west and east. Here you there are almost 5 kilometres walkable paths and bridges. Grunnerløkka is today the most fashion place in town with lots of bars, restaurants and designers clothing shop.

Close by you can visit the Botanical Garden which covers some 345 acres and date back to 1814. The Munch Museum is on the opposite side of the Garden.

Grønland also called little Karachi may probably become the new hip neighbourhood for Oslo. From here you may just walk to Gamlebyen and visit the Medieval Park with its ruins from Middle Age.

Marjorstua and Frogner offer boutiques and expensive places to eat. The architecture is very nice in this area so lift your head.

In a sunny day you can rent a bike. You will find over 1000 of them in the centre. Just go to the tourist information by the City Hall and pay a deposit of NOK 500,- you can use the bike for 3 hours. You may try canoeing in the Oslo fjord and most of lakes surrounding the city.

Throughout the year you can visit the island and other fjord areas. Both Hovedøya (with is ruins of a Cistercian abbey form the 11 th Century) and Gressholmen have ferry connections all year and to Bygdøy you can take a bus during off season.
