Sibiu On The Road - Hostel in Europe

Sibiu, Romania
In 2007 Sibiu is celebrating a well earned title of European Culture Capital. This city, also known as Hermannstadt to Germans, is one of the oldest cities in Europe – it was build by Germans in Transylvania in early 1200s’.

Sibiu has all the elements of culture and history, with its many squares, churches and grand architecture. Its old town is one of the grandest examples of medieval neighbourhoods in Europe, showing the typical narrow streets and ancient houses.

Well worth seeing is the Bruckenthal, one of the oldest museums in Romania and one of the first in Europe. It was founded by the Governor of Transylvania in 1790 and has been open to the public since 1817. Among it many treasure are painting by Rubens, Van Dyck and many more.

Astra Museum Complex, “Museum of Traditional Folk civilization” is situated just outside the old town. It is a second largest open air museum in the world covering over 100 acres of forest and parkland. It features hundreds of buildings and structures representing Romania’s architectural styles. One of its most fascinating sites is the traditional witch’s house. And the best way to see this all is definitely by horse drawn carts!
